Fencer-First Philosophy

What Makes Lynx Cup Different

LynxCup is built to give fencers the best tournament experience possible and to treat HEMA like what it is: a modern sport with historic roots.

Our priorities are simple: fun, fairness, clarity, and professional execution from first pool to final.

The Great Factor in Tournament Experience

Judging quality has the biggest impact on a fencer’s experience.

HEMA is fast, and calls must be made in a quarter to half a second.

That’s why our rules are simple, sensible, and HEMA-specific enough to preserve the character of our art, but our Judges can make quick, confident calls without juggling edge cases or debating a variety of timing variants.

Trained Officials, Clear Standards

We invest in our officials. Directors and Judges train year-round, review scenarios, and practice making clean, consistent calls under pressure.

Many of our Directors are also highly rated, experienced HEMA fencers.

They have thousands of hours in the ring to give them the insight to read an exchange and rule decisively.

It’s not an easy job! Practice and a clear rule set make objective consistency possible.

Transparency at Every Step

Mistakes can happen, perfection isn’t the bar, but accountability is.

We design the event so fencers always understand what happened and why.

  • Calls are explainable. A fencer may always ask the director for more clarification on a given call.
  • Data is visible. Pool results, bout scores, and standings are posted so you can verify outcomes for correctness and understanding.
  • Tournament Staff is available to answer questions and resolve disputes if needed.
  • Balance We aim to create pools that are as balanced as possible, using proven sports seeding methodologies.
  • Standard Seeding we use Olympic-style seeding, or Standard seeding for DE placement.
  • Clear conventions. Scores count up, the clock counts down, and formats are known sports standards to make them easy to follow and understand

Sport, Not Re-enactment

We’re not here to prove a particular school of historical fencing, and we’re not simulating a medieval duel. We’re advancing a living, breathing sport that has captivated people for centuries, and will continue to do so with your help.

You are an important part of that future.

We look forward to seeing you at LynxCup
